About

I have been freelance translating from French to English since 2006.

I am a native English speaker, born and raised in New Zealand, and have been living and working in France for 20 years. I earned my qualifications in both New Zealand and French universities: a first class honours degree in International Relations and French (specialising in translation) from Victoria University of Wellington, New Zealand; and a Master of International Relations from University Paris 1 – Sorbonne.

I am a passionate linguist and I love the challenge of using words to build a bridge between my two cultures.

With an educational background in the social sciences, followed by a year as the in-house translator for Pierre and Marie Curie University’s communications department, it was only natural for me to specialize in higher education and social science translation.

Why choose a translator specialized in your field or sector?

The goals of effective communication may be the same in French and in English, but they are arrived at in different ways. Not only do the style and register which suit one language require adaptation to ensure they do the same job in the other, different fields use different vocabulary and manners of expression.

If you have spent time, thought and effort on producing an effective piece of French writing for publication in print or on the web, you need an English translation which, while perfectly capturing the meaning and nuances of the original, is both stylishly written and tailored to your particular English-speaking readership.

Only a specialized, native English-speaking translator with in-depth knowledge of both the source and target cultures in the specific field concerned can achieve this. That is why I translate only into English, and only in my specialist fields of higher education and the social sciences.

Jessica Edwards has shown strong analytical skills, a thorough knowledge of the different academic styles in both languages and of the courses of a large French university, and a perfect knowledge of French and English typographies which make her work truly polished.
