Social Sciences

To translate in the social sciences, knowing the right words is not enough.

Social science research and theories are highly influenced by particular political, social, cultural and academic contexts. As well as an intimate knowledge of the subject matter, translators must grasp these implicit yet crucial factors in both the source and the target languages if they are to achieve a respect for the methodological approach, intellectual categories, taxonomy, etc. of the source, and maximum clarity in the translated text. Finally, they must consider culture-specific technical terms, citation methods, and stylistic conventions, and deal with them appropriately.

My educational background in the social sciences, long translation experience in this set of disciplines and continuing interest in social science research make me well-equipped for this challenging field of translation.

Whether you are a researcher looking to submit your own article in faultless translation to a peer-reviewed journal, a publisher with a French manuscript to translate, or an agency keen to satisfy demanding academic clients, let me use my complex skillset to provide you with a translation of the highest quality.

WHAT I HAVE TO OFFER

  • Having studied politics, international relations and sociology in New Zealand and in France, I am very well-read in these fields in both languages and am familiar with the differing approaches prevalent in the Anglo-Saxon and French research cultures.

  • I have translated dozens of articles in history, political science, anthropology, sociology, history of law, psychology, and related fields, both for direct clients (academics) and agencies.

  • As with a good social scientist, a good translator in this field does not pretend to have all the answers, but rather to ask the right questions. I undertake to talk through translation options and complications with the author or client throughout the translation process.

  • I only accept translations if I am comfortable with the subject matter and can promise to meet the highest standards.
